Crewmen, deckhands and fish processors injured while working aboard these vessels are protected under federal maritime law. The Jones Act provides compensation to injured crewmen and fish processors who are injured as a result of their employer’s negligence or the unseaworthiness of their vessel. Damages under the Jones include compensation for pain and suffering, disability, dismemberment, lost past and future wages, lost earning capacity, medical and nursing expenses. Crewmen who become injured or ill while working aboard a vessel are also entitled to maintenance and cure benefits (link) under the general maritime law. It is important for all injured crewmen and processors to fully understand their rights to compensation under the Jones Act and general maritime law.© Chad Harris
