In hip replacement surgery (artheroplasty), surgeons remove worn out sections of the hip bone and pelvis and replace them with new parts: a prosthetic hip. A metal rod with a ball on the end is implanted into the thigh bone. The ball fits into a plastic socket attached to the pelvic bone. The goal is to increase mobility, improve joint function, and relieve pain.
Patients who are younger than 60, not overweight, and are otherwise in good health, have options to traditional hip replacement surgery. Their doctors may recommend a new minimally invasive hip replacement surgery that uses a shorter incision and results in a faster recovery time than traditional hip replacement surgery. Joint resurfacing may also be an option, especially for younger patients who are very active. Resurfacing covers the ball of the hip and the pelvic socket with metal. It preserves as much bone as possible so that a total hip replacement may still be an option in the future.
