FOUR CREWMEN ESCAPE SINKING OF FISHING VESSEL CARLEY RENEE NEAR DUTCH HARBOR ALASKA

The crew of the CARLEY RENEE contacted the Coast Guard on October 30, reporting they were taking on water and abandoning ship 22 miles east of Unalaska, Alaska. The fishing vessel GUARDIAN responded to the May Day call and was on the scene shortly to recover the four crewmen who had escaped the sinking craft via life raft. The crew of the CARLEY RENEE were reported in good condition. Magone Marine Salvage, in coordination with the Coast Guard, attempted recovery of the capsized and partially submerged vessel the following day. Shortly after towing operations got underway, the vessel sank. The CARLEY RENEE was reported to have 2,000 gallons of fuel on board. Potential environmental impact from the sinking was thought to be low. Investigation into the cause of why the CARLEY RENEE began taking on water and capsized is under way.
