Three Crewmen Die When Cruise Ship Crashes While Docking In Egypt

An Italian luxury cruise ship has slammed into a pier while docking in Egypt leaving three crewmen dead and four passengers injured. The deceased crewmen are reported to be from India and Brazil. The cruise ship, COSTA EUROPA, was carrying 1,437 passengers at the time of the accident. The cruise ship is owned by Costa Crociere, an Italian subsidiary of Carnival Corporation.

The crash gashed a six foot hole on the starboard side of the cruise ship. All passengers from the vessel were able to disembark safely to the dock. The passengers are being flown to their destinations by Costa Crociere. The COSTA EUROPA is reported to be due to depart the Costa Cruise Fleet in April.

Costa is citing the cause of the accident as being high winds. The area had been hit by high winds in the evening prior to the accident. An investigation is underway into the cause of the accident.

Casualties aboard large cruise ships have been too frequent in recent years and there have been narrow escapes from major tragedies. The exact number of cruise ship injuries and deaths is a closely guarded secret by the cruise ship companies.
