Crab Boat Sinks On Willapa Bay; One Crewman Dead

The 30-foot fishing vessel ELLA ANN sank at the mouth of Willapa Bay on Sunday, with the loss of one crewman. 34 year old Luis Perez from South Bend was lost in the accident when the ELLA ANN capsized in an area known as "the sink" just inside the mouth of the bar. After being thrown into the water, the captain of the vessel, Eric Petit, was able to contact the Coast Guard to ask for emergency rescue via his cell telephone. A Coast Guard helicopter was on the scene in 40 minutes, but they were only able to locate Petit, who they saw slip beneath the sea and apparently drown. The helicopter crew was able to hoist Petit aboard the helicopter and revived him using CPR. Perez's body was recovered from the bay the following day.
