Capsized Boat Off Ocean City, MD Kills One, Five Others Rescued

Coast Guard watchstanders received word at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11 that an 18-foot boat had capsized at the mouth of the Ocean City Inlet off the shore of Maryland, and multiple people fell in the water. Patrick Thompsen, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, said that the boat became disabled when the anchor became caught in the boat's propeller, which caused the vessel to drift into the turbulent inlet.

Two rescue boat crews responded from Station Ocean City and were able to get all six people who were on the boat out of the water. One man, 59-year-old Henry Ki Chang Chung, was pulled from the water and was unconscious and unresponsive. After unsuccessful revival efforts, Ki Chang Chung was transferred to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD, where he was pronounced dead. According to the authorities, none of the six aboard were wearing life jackets. The fatality marks the ninth death in just two weeks in mid-Atlantic waters, representing a grim start to the summer boating season.
