Coast Guard Responds To Sunken Tug ARIES East Of St. Paul Island

Watchstanders at Communication Station Kodiak received notification from the crew of the 68-foot tug ARIES that the vessel was taking on water Sunday, June 26. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting any vessels in the area to assist the ARIES crew. Watchstanders also directed an airplane crew, a helicopter crew and boat rescue crew to the scene.

The airplane crew arrived first and confirmed that the tug had sunk and all four crewmembers were safely aboard the barge they were towing. The crew of the 29-foot good Samaritan vessel ALASKA KNIGHT was also on scene to assist. The helicopter crew safely transported the crew to St. Paul Island.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage personnel are investigating the cause of the sinking. Officials said the crewmembers had no reported injuries.
