Six Injured As Crab Boat Runs Aground Near Shaw Island, Wash.

The Coast Guard was notified early Friday, July 8, of a crab boat which ran aground with seven people on board near Shaw Island, about 70 miles northwest of Seattle. Two Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter were involved in the search, said Lt. Marina Turner. Also in response was a San Juan County sheriff's boat, which arrived on the scene first and picked up the crew members. Six people were injured, including two who were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after suffering broken bones and hypothermia.

Although the cause of the grounding is unknown, the 22-foot crabbing vessel remains on the rocks and did not sink. The Coast Guard reported that there were only four life jackets on board, even though there were seven crew members. The Coast Guard vessel did not find a fuel spill.
