Alaska Crewman With Head Injury Airlifted From F/V CONSTELLATION

A 26-year old crewman who suffered a head injury while working as a fisherman in Alaska has been airlifted from the 116-foot fishing vessel Constellation. The accident occurred Wednesday when the crewmember reportedly fell in ten foot seas about 45 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor. The vessel transported the injured man to Dutch Harbor, where a Coast Guard Hercules helicopter was waiting to transport the injury victim to Anchorage for treatment at Alaska Regional Hospital.

Many fishermen are injured each year as a result of falls while working aboard their vessel. Under the Jones Act, an employer owes a duty to provide each of his crewmembers a seaworthy vessel and a safe place to work. Given the extreme conditions that fishermen sometimes work under, extra caution and care is required in the design, operation, and maintenance of vessels.
