Man Overboard Off Sand Point, Alaska-based F/V GLACIER SPIRIT

Friday, March 9, at 10:26 a.m., the Alaska Department of Fish and Game contacted the Coast Guard for assistance searching for a crewman who had gone overboard from 47-foot F/V GLACIER SPIRIT near Sand Point, Alaska. The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and an airplane to search by air for the missing man.

Time is of the essence any time a person goes overboard, but hypothermia sets in even quicker in Alaskan waters. These air crews covered about 46 miles before making the difficult decision to suspend the search at 4:42 p.m. that same day.

During the search, weather was reported as 12-foot seas with winds of 25 mph. Further details have not yet been released; the crewman remains missing.

UPDATE 3/19/12

According to local Pennsylvania and Ohio reports, the missing man is 19-year-old Joe Haller of Greenville, PA. He is reported to have been working at sea since this past December.
