F/V SCANDIA Crew Rescued by Coast Guard near Kodiak, Alaska

Shortly before noon on June 17, the crew of F/V SCANDIA alerted the Coast Guard that SCANDIA was taking on water and that they were unable to control the flooding. The crew got into their survival suits and abandoned ship for their skiff.

Within two hours, a Coast Guard helicopter safely hoisted the crew of five to Air Station Kodiak. None of the crew reported any injuries. Here is another example of a crew prepared for an emergency and who acted promptly.

So far, no pollution from the approximately 1,200 gallons of diesel and 80 gallons of lube oil have been reported. According to Coast Guard Vessel Documentation, Kodiak-based SCANDIA is wooden-hulled, 48 feet long, and was built in 1949. She remains partially submerged 70 miles west of Kodiak, and all mariners are advised to use caution in that area.
