F/V MARY KAY Sinks in Dixon Entrance, Alaska

Shortly before 11:00 p.m. on July 26, the crew of 79-foot F/V MARY KAY issued a mayday to the Coast Guard that they were taking on water in the Dixon Entrance near Cape Chacon, which is at the southern tip of Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. The Coast Guard then relayed an urgent marine information broadcast. Among those responding were an Alaska Wildlife Trooper skiff and Good Samaritans F/V IRISH ROSE and F/V NORTH WIND. By the time these vessels arrived, the four crewmembers of MARY KAY had donned their survival suits and abandoned ship for their life raft. Those aboard the Alaska Wildlife Trooper skiff were able to take on the four MARY KAY crewmembers and transfer them to NORTH WIND, which then took them up to Ketchikan. No major medical problems were reported.

MARY KAY eventually sank in about 600 feet of water at 3:00 a.m. July 27, roughly ten miles south of Prince of Wales Island, taking approximately 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel down with her. Because of the depth of the water, no recovery is planned, though the Coast Guard will continue to monitor for pollution, as well as investigate the cause of the sinking.

The safety preparedness of the MARY KAY crew, as well as the quick responses of the crews of the Good Samaritan fishing vessels and the Alaska Wildlife Trooper skiff, which were able to arrive before the US and Canadian Coast Guards, are credited for the timely rescue and survival of those aboard MARY KAY.

One local news source states that MARY KAY hails out of Edmonds, Washington, with at least one crewmember from Puget Sound, and is registered to Mary Kay Fisheries, LLC.
