Helping Injured Seamen Is All We Do Serving Seaman And Fishermen Across The Nation

Fishing Most Dangerous Job in 2011

Earlier this year, we reported on the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics data on most dangerous jobs in the U.S. The data for 2011 was recently published, showing that work in the fishing industry continues to top the list for workplace fatalities. For 2011, the fatality rate for fishers was 121.2 per 100,000 U.S. workers, not much different from the 2010 rate. The issue of safety in the fishing industry remains of utmost importance.

Safety concerns include machine guarding, lock-out/tag-out regulations, appropriate safety and communication gear, vessel stability, and equipment, safety, and emergency training.

On October 16, dockside inspections for most commercial fishing vessels become mandatory. The high number of fatalities and injuries aboard fishing vessels over the years is no longer excused as a traditional hazard, but is seen as a serious issue to redress; thus, the Coast Guard Act of 2010 mandates compliance with safety regulations. Read here for details on the new requirements and dockside inspections.

Increasing safety awareness and decreasing tolerance for needless injury and death has helped improve the lot of many fishing industry workers, but much more can be done. Knowing fishing industry work, and any work at sea, is dangerous, employers have a duty to provide such fundamentals as training, machine guarding, safety gear, and a seaworthy vessel and equipment. If you or someone you know is injured because of unsafe working conditions at sea, an experienced maritime attorney can help you understand your rights.
