F/V MEGAN MARIE and Crew of Five Avoids Sinking Off Nantucket, MA

The crew of 80-foot F/V MEGAN MARIE sent a distress call to the Coast Guard last Wednesday evening, February 20, reporting that their dewatering pumps were not keeping up with the flooding they were experiencing. MEGAN MARIE was about 100 miles southeast of Nantucket, MA, in seas of 10 to 14 feet with 25-knot winds, at the time.

According to reports, the Coast Guard responded with their new Ocean Sentry aircraft out of Cape Cod, which delivered two pumps by around 3:45 a.m. Thursday morning. A third pump was then delivered by Hercules helicopter. These three additional pumps did the trick in bringing the flooding under control and allowing the crew to determine that the source of the flooding was a two-inch hole under the engine block. Two Coast Guard cutters have escorted MEGAN MARIE safely back to port in New Bedford, MA.

The Coast Guard noted that the MEGAN MARIE crew were prepared with pumps, survival suits, and life jackets, and that they did the right thing by calling for help in time.
