F/V NEAHKAHNIE Grounded On Whidbey Island Near Bush Point

Around 4:00 a.m. today, the Coast Guard received word that Seattle-based, steel-hulled F/V NEAHKAHNIE had run aground near Bush Point, which is on the west side of Whidbey Island. According to reports, no one aboard the 97-foot vessel was injured and there has been no pollution. The Coast Guard has set a 250-foot safety zone around NEAHKAHNIE, and a salvage company has placed 500 feet of containment boom as a precaution while she's grounded.

At last word, the crew is hoping to get free with the next high tide. Otherwise, she'll likely be towed. The Coast Guard is investigating the reasons behind the grounding.

UPDATE 6/6/13

According to the Coast Guard, NEAHKAHNIE was floated that same afternoon with the aid of a tugboat. No damage to the hull was found during inspection. The Coast Guard and the tug have escorted NEAHKAHNIE to dock near the Interbay area of Seattle for further inspection.
