F/V SWIFT Crewman Missing in Icy Strait, Alaska

Just after midnight this morning, F/V PACIFIC HORIZON arrived in Icy Strait, which is about 40 miles west of Juneau, to meet up with the deckhand and captain of 34-foot F/V SWIFT; they found no one aboard. The PACIFIC HORIZON crew contacted the Coast Guard, which issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a search of the area.

The captain of SWIFT was found near his overturned dinghy on a beach north of there in the Excursion Inlet area. He was said to be mildly hypothermic and transported by Coast Guard helicopter for medical attention in Juneau. Apparently, when the deckhand fell into the water without a PDF, the captain tried to use the dinghy to save him, but then the captain also got into trouble. The captain was able to make way to the beach with the dinghy.

The deckhand has not yet been located. The Coast Guard is conducting a search by sea and air in hopes of finding him. The weather is reported to be calm with light winds with a water temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

UPDATE June 19, 2013

The 34-hour, over 450 square mile search by air, sea, and underwater, for the deckhand has been suspended. The weather remained fairly calm with seas becoming two feet with a temperature dropping to 57 degrees by evening. Our condolences go out to the young man's family and friends.
