F/V ANNA MARY Lobsterman Rescued After 12 Hours in the Ocean

At 6:30 a.m. yesterday, a crewmember aboard 44-foot lobster boat ANNA MARY reported a man missing. The man had last been seen the night before when he assumed the 9:00 watch; apparently, he went overboard sometime during his watch. The Coast Guard launched an extensive search by air and sea, joined by other agencies and Good Samaritan vessel crews, which ended up covering over 780 square miles.

The man, John Aldridge, was spotted about 43 miles off Montauk, NY, by a Coast Guard helicopter during the early afternoon. A swimmer was lowered to assist him hoist to safety. The amazing thing is that he survived so long after going into the water wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and no life jacket. Mr. Aldridge told the Coast Guard he kept afloat by trapping air in his rubber boots.

Once he was taken ashore, Mr. Aldridge was sent to Falmouth Hospital in Massachusetts to be treated for hypothermia, dehydration, and exposure. After Mr. Aldridge's grueling ordeal, and knowing so many do not survive falls overboard, it is a pleasure to report a successful rescue!
