F/V CHARLIE + CAROL Sinks Off Ilwaco, Washington

On July 14, just before midnight, the lone operator of F/V CHARLIE + CAROL contacted the Coast Guard, telling them that his on-board pump was not keeping up with flooding after his vessel hit something unseen. He is said to have estimated over 400 gallons of water aboard his vessel at that time.

When the Coast Guard helicopter arrived, CHARLIE + CAROL was listing heavily to starboard. A swimmer was lowered and helped the vessel operator first into a life raft while the hoist basket was lowered to them. When the Coast Guard motor lifeboat reached the scene, CHARLIE + CAROL had sunk.

This all happened about 25 miles west of Ilwaco, Washington. Vessel registration records indicate that CHARLIE + CAROL was 31 feet, wooden-hulled, and built in 1941.

The rescued operator was taken to the Coast Guard station in Ilwaco. According to the Coast Guard, he refused an alcohol breath test and will be charged with BUI. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
