F/V LONE STAR Pollution and Salvage Efforts Continue at Igushik River

Last week, Alaska Chadux Corporation salvage divers completed sealing F/V LONE STAR fuel vents. It is the job of Magone Marine Service to lighter and remove her from the water.

On Friday, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced that the two-mile oil sheen had apparently dissipated, and that they would open commercial fishing in the area if there were no sheen the next day. However, the next day they followed up with the announcement that an oil sheen had indeed been observed and that fishing would remain closed until LONE STAR has been removed. In the meantime, just over 27,000 pounds of salmon caught by nearby set netters had to be dumped due to contamination.

It's been over two weeks since LONE STAR sank in eighteen feet of water near the mouth of the Igushik River. Salvage delays have been caused by weather problems and strong currents.
