F/V CHAOS Grounded Near Dutch Harbor, Alaska

Four fishermen from F/V CHAOS wound up disembarking their grounded vessel and headed south on foot to find shelter this past Saturday, awaiting Coast Guard aid.

CHAOS had been lying at anchor Friday night when it all started. Rough weather led to her anchor line breaking and a subsequent grounding. The crew's call for help was relayed to the Coast Guard by the Dutch Harbor harbormaster. Fortunately, the four crewmembers of CHAOS were not in immediate danger, because with a combination of winds of 50mph with gusts up to 83mph and the nearby cliffs, the Coast Guard helicopter that arrived was forced to return to base, delaying the airlift until conditions improved. Then, around midnight, the CHAOS crew decided to leave the vessel on their own, letting the harbormaster know their location and bringing flares with them.

By around 9:00 a.m., the weather had improved to 15mph with gusts up to 24mph. The Coast Guard located the fishermen and effected a successful hoist and transport of all four crewmembers to Dutch Harbor.

CHAOS is a longliner based in Homer, Alaska. The owner is working with authorities in salvaging the vessel. According to reports, she's in good condition with 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board.
