F/V WESTERN VENTURE Fire - Five Crewmen Rescued from Life Raft

Yesterday morning, the Coast Guard received a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) alert registered to one of crew of 49-foot, Kodiak-based WESTERN VENTURE, followed shortly by the EPIRB (Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon) alert registered to the vessel.

Early Tuesday morning, a fire broke out in the galley of BRISTOL LEADER, a 167-foot freezer-longliner moored at Pier 91in Seattle. She had been scheduled to leave for the Bering Sea to fish cod, but will now remain in Seattle for repairs for another week.

F/V ANNA MARY Lobsterman Rescued After 12 Hours in the Ocean

At 6:30 a.m. yesterday, a crewmember aboard 44-foot lobster boat ANNA MARY reported a man missing. The man had last been seen the night before when he assumed the 9:00 watch; apparently, he went overboard sometime during his watch. The Coast Guard launched an extensive search by air and sea, joined by other agencies and Good Samaritan vessel crews, which ended up covering over 780 square miles.

VICTORIA CLIPPER III Engine Fire Near Seattle, Washington

Friday evening, after a day of whale watching near the San Juan Islands, VICTORIA CLIPPER III dropped from her usual speed to much, much slower and headed for Shilshole Bay Marina instead of her destination at Pier 69. The captain let everyone know that there had been a small fire, which was under control, and that they were docking at Shilshole to be on the safe side. None of the nearly 160 people on board were injured and, by all reports, the crew handled the situation well. The passengers safely disembarked and were transported to Pier 69 on buses.

F/V TUXEDNI Crew Awarded Gold Life Saving Medals for Rescue of F/V HERITAGE Crew

Early on January 25, 2012, the seven-person crew of F/V HERITAGE placed a distress call as their vessel sank in rough seas off Kodiak, AK. The Coast Guard picked up two of the HERITAGE crew from the water by helicopter, as Seattle-based F/V TUXEDNI crew picked up the other five from their life raft.

F/V BLUE PACIFIC Fire Doused - No Injuries Reported

Yesterday morning, while moored in Unalaska, a fire broke out in the hold of 180-foot freezer longliner BLUE PACIFIC. Apparently, a space heater started it, lighting nearby paper fish packing bags on fire. According to the report, Unalaska firefighters, State Troopers, and the U.S. Coast Guard all responded and had the fire out in about two hours.

M/V HORIZON TRADER Crewmember Medevaced After Chest Injury

A 47-year-old man was medevaced about 200 miles east of Chesapeake Bay on March 6 after a fellow crewmember aboard 780-foot freighter HORIZON TRADER contacted the Coast Guard with the request for help. Apparently, the man had fallen and suffered injuries to his chest. He was airlifted by Coast Guard helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia. No other details have been released at this time.

F/V PERSISTENCE Safely Escorted into Grays Harbor, WA

Last night, according to a Coast Guard report, the three-person crew of crabbing vessel PERSISTENCE found themselves taking on more water than their dewatering pump could keep up with, and they were running low on the fuel the pump required. Seas were reported as 10-12 feet with 10-20 knots of wind.
